Wales 0 England 2
2012 European Championship Qualifier
Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, Wales - Saturday 26 March 2011

Heading into this game, there was a lot of attention on the England team following the controversial decision by Capello to reinstate John Terry as captain. The Chelsea defender had been stripped of the captaincy in February 2010 following allegations over his private life. The England manager decided that one year without the skipper's armband was sufficient punishment for Terry. The Welsh team suffered a blow going into the game as they were without Gareth Bale due to a hamstring injury.

Unsurprisingly this game was a sellout. The last time the teams met was in September 2005. England, in their change kit of white shirts and blue shorts, took an early lead when James Collins made contact with Ashley Young, and the referee awarded a penalty without hesitation. Frank Lampard calmly hit the ball into the left of the Welsh net, with Hennessey going the wrong way. This was Lampard's first goal since September 2009.

Darren Bent extended England's tally in the 14th minute. Glen Johnson sent a long ball up the right of the pitch to Young, and with a lovely pass into the box the Aston Villa winger found Bent arriving in the box, who hit the ball into the roof of the Welsh net.

With England sitting on a two-goal cushion, 30 minutes were on the clock before Wales passed the ball around in England's half. The only down side to England's first half display was Rooney picking up a yellow card. He will now miss England's next European Championship qualifier which is against Switzerland in June.

The second half was not as entertaining as the first 45 minutes of play. Wales did have more possession in the second half but they were unable to break down England's defence, with only three shots on Hart's goal.

England continue to lead Group G after picking up a further three points in Cardiff, however Wales languish at the bottow of the group having not earned a point four games into the campaign.
