South Korea 1-1 England
Seogwipo, South Korea - Tuesday 21 May 2002

Sven Goran Eriksson decided to deviate from the usual 4-4-2 formation for this friendly, and try a 4-3-3 line-up, as time ticks on towards the 2002 World Cup. England were playing this friendly against one of the co-hosts of the World Cup who proved to be no pushover.

England took the lead after 26 minutes of play when Emile Heskey played the ball to Scholes, who crossed the ball to Owen for the Liverpool forward to knock the ball into the net.

Five minutes later Ashley Cole tripped a South Korean player outside the box, but the resulting free-kick went blazing over the crossbar. South Korea were gaining more possession and Hong had the best play of the first half when he struck the ball 30-yards out from England's net which Nigel Martyn managed to tip over the bar.

During half-time, England made eight changes to the team. The opening five mintues of the first half saw the South Korean coach, Guus Hiddink being warned by the referee to calm down. Then the home team scored the equaliser on 52 minutes when Seol headed the ball from a corner to the far post, where Park snook ahead of Teddy Sheringham to head the ball past James.

South Korea made a good substitution when they brought on Ahn who immediately had a impact on the game and narrowly missed out on a number of chances to put his country in the lead. One shot was from 40-yards out but it went high over England's net, and another was just wide from a shot from the halfway line.

As the game wore on, South Korea grew in confidence as England struggled to settle after making numerous changes to the team in the interval. Not to worry though, as it was only a friendly and England's first World Cup game is almost two weeks away.
