Portugal 1-1 England
Estadio Algarve, Portugal - Wednesday 18 February 2004

This was a good opportunity for England to test themselves against the host nation of the European Championships to be held in June, and to experience play and conditions in a Portugese stadium. This game would be ideal preparation for the upcoming tournament.

Rooney was in the mood to impress again tonight and teamed-up well with Michael Owen, both players working tirelessly. With the game not very old, Beckham delivered the ball to Rooney who was making a dash down the right of the field. Rooney's pass to Scholes though just missed the England player but the link-up gave fans a sense of how England can play and provided some excitement in what wasn't a brilliant first half. Portugal had their first real opportunity to get the go-ahead goal early in the game too, the fifth minute to be precise. Figo, who was representing his country for the 100th time, tested James but the England goalkeeper was able to prevent the goal.

Ledley King gave a reasonable performance tonight, twice preventing Pauleta from taking a shot at England's goal. It was his presence up front though for which he will be remembered when he scored England's only goal in the 47th minute. Beckham took a free-kick which struck King's leg, only for the ball to be deflected by Andrade into the goal. King was accredited with the goal. Portugal's equaliser also came from a free-kick, from 30 yards out, but not until the 70th minute and from Pauleta. James moved too late to prevent the ball going into the top corner.

All-in-all, not a bad night for England. Portugal are a great side and both teams showed the talent they possess as teams and as individuals.
