Kazakhstan 0 England 4
2010 World Cup Qualifier - UEFA Group 6
Tcentralny, Almaty, Kazakhstan - Saturday 6 June 2009

There were three changes to the England side which beat the Ukraine in April with Robert Green replacing an injured David James (shoulder surgery), for his first international start. Both Aaron Lennon and Rio Ferdinand were injured, the latter suffering a groin injury but may recover in time for the Andorra fixture on Wednesday. Capello replacing them with Theo Walcott and Matthew Upson. Gary Cahill was called into the squad to take Ferdinand's place for this away game but was not named in the team.

In the opening minute the home side could have been a goal up but fortunately for England, captain John Terry, blocked Ostapenko's shot, after the ball was given away by Glen Johnson to Kirov. With Kazakhstan being known for stronger first half performances in these qualifiers, England could have been in for a tough time during the first 45 minutes. Gareth Barry received a caution in the 16th minute and as a result he will be suspended for Wednesday's match. A minute after Barry's booking, Ostapenko headed the ball into England's net after a free-kick from Kukeyez but the linesman flagged for offside. Ostapenko was stretchered off ten or so minutes later.

Having completed a move to Manchester City this past week, Gareth Barry opened England's scoring in the 40th minute with his first goal for his country, heading in at the far post a cross from Gerrard. In time added on at the end of the first half, Emile Heskey scored his first goal for England in seven years. Gerrard tried a long shot which was stopped by Mokin, but the ball went to Heskey who was able to put the ball in Kazakhstan's net.

Capello took off Theo Walcott during the interval and replaced him with Shaun Wright-Phillips. In the 73rd minute Wayne Rooney scored an incredible goal. Glen Johnson had sent in the ball to Rooney but Mokin was able to stop the Manchester United player's attempt. However, Rooney was on hand for the rebound, and with an overhead kick scored his eighth goal in his last six England appearances. David Beckham entered the game in the 75th minute, replacing Glen Johnson for his 111th cap. Then in the 78th minute, Frank Lampard on his 70th appearance for his country, scored England's fourth goal from the penalty spot after Heskey was fouled by Abdulin.

England left Kazakhstan for a long journey home and to face Andorra on Wednesday, but with them them took three points and another step closer to next year's World Cup Finals.
