As the World Cup approaches, Sven Goran Eriksson continued to experiment with his side in this friendly. Three players made their debuts - Wayne Bridge, Darius Vassell and Michael Ricketts. Out of the newcomers, Vassell made the biggest impression, scoring England's equaliser. The game also marked a milestone for Gary Neville who collected his 50th cap.
England found themselves trailing 1-0 to the home team after 26 minutes when Kluivert put Holland ahead. Campbell had tried to head the ball out of danger for England, but Kluivert pounced on his chance to score and hit his shot well to put the ball over Nigel Martyn and into the net.
One of England's best players in the first half, Bridge, was forced to sit on the bench for the second half of the game following a foot injury. Chris Powell replaced the Southampton defender. Eriksson made several changes to his team at half time in an attempt to see as many of his players in action as possible.
Vassell had his dream start to an exciting looking international career when he equalised for England in the 61st minute with a great goal (volley). His contribution to England's forward line-up in this match will make him a contender for a place in England's World Cup squad.
England's coach was happy with his team's performance in Ajax saying, "They had more possession but we created more chances."
