Germany 1 England 2
Olympic Stadium, Berlin, Germany - Wednesday 19 November 2008

England ended the year on a high with their fifth consecutive win this season. A win over old foe Germany is always sweet, even when only a friendly. Both teams were missing regular first team players, with Capello losing 8 regular players due to injury, but despite that, he was able to field a team that played well together.

Capello started Agbonlahor (making his debut) and Defoe up front, and within two minutes they were almost able to break through the German defence. Matthew Upson broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute after Adler failed to stop a Stewart Downing corner. Upson, however, got to the ball and put England in the lead with his first goal for his country from close range. The visitors lead could have been extended to two goals before half-time when a long shot from Downing was cleared by Adler, but the ball only went as far as Wright-Phillips, who put the ball just wide of the far post.

Both teams changed their goalkeepers during the break, and England lost Jermaine Defoe through injury, Bent being his replacement. It was Bent who could have made the scoreline 2-0 but with an empty net in front of him, after rounding Weise, he stumbled and his shot went wide.

Germany pulled level in the 63rd minute after John Terry appeared to back off from shielding the ball with Scott Carson just yards away. However, there appeared to be a mis-communication as Helme was able to steal the ball and put it into an empty net.

Both Agbonlahor and Wright-Phillips were unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, with the latter seeing his shot hit the post. However, after his part in conceding Germany's goal, captain, Terry, made amends in the 84th minute when he headed home Stewart Downing's free-kick.

Big strides have been made by the England team so far this season. With luck, the good run will continue after the winter break.
