England 1 Wales 0
2012 European Championship Qualifier - Group G
Wembley Stadium, London, England - Tuesday 6 September 2011

Having played in Bulgaria this past Friday, England returned to home soil to take on Wales. England's opponenets were without Craig Bellamy who was suspended for this match. Frank Lampard, having been left out of England's last starting eleven, made a return to the team. He replaced Scott Parker, while James Milner took the place of Theo Walcott who was out with an injury.

Early in the match, following a corner, there was a glimpse that John Terry would put England in the lead, but the Chelsea defender was not able to get his header on target. Stewart Downing saw a good opportunity go begging when the ball went off his shin and high above the crossbar. Thirty-five minutes into the game Stewart Downing took the ball down the right to the byline, played the ball to Ashley Young, who from outside the 6 yard box, hit the ball past two defenders, and Hennessey, and into the Welsh goal. Before the break, England took a short corner, however Rooney couldn't connect his head to Ashley Young's ball.

In the second half Gareth Barry missed the net with his effort, but he did make a good run later, getting the ball to Lampard but his chance went over the crossbar. Wales came agnonizingly close to equalizing in the 77th minute when Earnshaw put the ball over the crossbar from 5 yards, when all that was required was a tap into Hart's net.

This win was England's first at Wembley in over a year, and put the Three Lions six points clear of second place Montenegro. England now only need to draw against Montenegro next month to qualify for next year's European Championships. One final snippet of information.....Ashley Cole received his 91st cap which takes him to 6th place in the table of leading appearances for England.
