Events on the pitch got underway when David Beckham was presented with a golden cap from Sir Bobby Charlton to mark the former captain's 100th appearance for England which occured in March in Paris.
England could have been a goal up in the 11th minute of the match when Gerrard was fouled. Beckham took the awarded free-kick and Gerrard put the ball into the visitors net, only for the goal to be disallowed as Beckham had taken the free-kick before the referee had blown his whistle. Gerrard was enjoying a good game as the match progressed, playing some good football and taking some decent shots. Beckham was also having a good match. Gerrard played a lovely ball to Defoe, who started his first match in 20 months, in the 34th minute but his effort just went wide of Tim Howard's goal.
The deadlock was broken in the 38th minute when quite fittingly the goal was a result of a Beckham free-kick. John Terry rose to meet the ball and headed it low and with power past Howard. Perhaps the goal will help Terry, tonight's England captain, ease his disappointment of losing the Champions League Final last week just a little bit. A minute later Terry was clearing away the ball at the other end of the field when the US tried to equalise.
Whilst it wasn't a dazzling display of football in the first half, England went into the changing rooms in the lead. Capello did make a change at the start of the second half, sending on Bentley for Beckham. The Blackburn Rovers player is challenging Beckham for his position (which can only be good for England) but after the LA Galaxy's player's performance in the first half, Bentley has a lot of work to do. The US made two substitutions during the break.
Eddie Johnson just missed England's net in the 47th minute when he put the ball just wide of James' net. Gerrard scored England's second goal of the night in the 58th minute. A lovely through ball from Gareth Barry, who replaced Lampard, was collected by Gerrard who hit the ball passed Guzan (on for Howard).
As the game fizzled out it became clear that there would be no further change to the scoreline. Capello had notched up another win and now heads to Trinidad for another friendly on Sunday.
