A few hours after Keegan announced to his players his squad for Euro 2000, England took to the pitch at Wembley to carry out their final home preparations for the European Championships. The match marked Alan Shearer's Wembley farewell and the debuts of Steve Gerrard and Gareth Barry.
Kevin Keegan decided to change his formation to 3-5-2 for this friendly against Ukraine and it paid off with a win. David Beckham amost created an excellent goal after 6 minutes but his free-kick just curled wide and then Paul Scholes beat the Ukrainian goalkeeper but his shot hit the post and away from the goal.
The Ukraine came to life after about 10 minutes of play and caused England's defence problems through Shevchenko and Rebrov. With about 1 minute remaining in the first half England scored against play. Ukraine conceeded a corner which was taken by Beckham. The ball was met by Shearer but Kernozenko pushed the ball out but only for it land to Fowler who made no mistake from 3 yards out. England went to the break a goal to the good.
England brought on Heskey for Fowler for the second half. Ukraine had the first serious shot of the second half but Nigel Martyn pulled off a good save to prevent the equaliser. Scholes appealled for a penalty after 60 minutes on the clock, claiming he was brought down in the box but the referee waved for play to continue. Marytn was in good form and made a great save from Shevchenko a moment later.
Tony Adams England goal drought came to an end in the 68th minute. The last time he scored for his country was in 1988. The goal came from another Beckham corner, and like the first goal, Kernozenko parryed the ball to an England player, this time to Adams who made the score 2-0.
With 15 minutes of the game remaining, Gareth Barry made his debut, replacing Phil Neville and Nicky Barmby subsituted Paul Scholes.
Heskey had a great chance to make the score 3-0 but after being one-on-one with Kernozenko the Liverpool striker hit the ball straight at the Ukrainian goalkeeper.
Having tried out a few more players and having played against good opposition, Keegan will be pleased with this result. The squad now travel to Malta for their final preparation game before the real thing on 12 June.
