England 2 Ukraine 1
2010 World Cup Qualifier - UEFA Group 6
Wembley Stadium, London, England - Wednesday 1 April 2009

England made two changes to the starting line-up from last Saturday's friendly against Slovakia with Rio Ferdinand replacing Matthew Upson, and Peter Crouch taking over from the injured Emile Heskey.

The homeside were almost on the scoreboard after only six minutes when Rooney's incredible bicycle kick went just over Piator's goal. Steven Gerrard saw his 20-yard free-kick narrowly miss Ukraine's goal, but it was Peter Crouch who opened the scoring on 29 minutes when Lampard's corner was met by John Terry, who headed the ball on to Crouch, who volleyed the ball into the goal, despite Pyator's head getting in the way.

David James had to stop a shot from Tymoschuk, and Pyatov had to make a save late in the first half from Gerrard after he latched on to a Rooney cross.

Rooney tried his luck three minutes into the second half but his shot went just wide of Ukraine's goal.

Capello sent on Beckham, for his 110th cap, in place of Aaron Lennon in the 58th minute, with the Ukraine switching out Voronin for Shevchenko three minutes earlier. Both players are on loan to AC Milan from their respective clubs of LA Galaxy and Chelsea. Shevchenko made his presence known in the match in the 74th minute when he equalised after the ball came off Glen Johnson to the Ukraine player, who put the ball into England's net from 10-yards. It looked as though England were going to have to settle for a draw, until Beckham took a free-kick which was headed on by Gerrard to Terry. The England captain hit the ball into the net from 6-yards, with five minutes remaining, and with it came the full three points from this match.

England have now made it five wins out of five in World Cup qualification, and if this run continues they will qualify for next year's finals without it going down to the wire.
