England 3 Switzerland 0
European Championship Finals - First Round, Group B
Municipal, Coimbre, Portugal - Thursday 17 June 2004

After the disasterous finale in their opening Euro 2004 game against France, England were looking at this game to correct their mistake from Sunday and get the three points they needed, if they had any hope in qualifying for the quarter-final round.

What a night it was for Everton's youngster, Wayne Rooney. He became the youngest scorer in the European Championship history and was an inspiration to the England team. Mid-way through the first half, Rooney gave England the lead after Michael Owen crossed the ball to his fellow Liverpudlian. Rooney nodded the ball into the net from 5 yards out. This goal gave England the platform they needed and despite a few shaky moments when Switzerland were on the attack, England were not going to fall apart as they had done four days earlier.

On the hour mark, Switzerland were reduced to 10 men after Haas was given his second yellow card of the game, the latter caution was given following a foul on Ashley Cole. Substitute Darius Vassell made his mark on the game not long after replacing Michael Owen by providing the ball to Rooney for the youngster to score his second goal, although he did have the post and Stiel to thank too for their contribution to the goal. Rooney was on fire.

Steven Gerrard put the game out of Switzerland's reach in the 82nd minute, meeting Gary Neville's cross and beating Stiel. It was game over and England were happy and relieved with a well earned three points on the board. Group B standings at this stage mean that England need at least a draw against the Croatians in their final group game.
