England 1-0 Sweden
Friendly
Wembley Stadium, London, England - Tuesday 15 November 2011

England wrapped up the year with a friendly against Sweden, the 22nd encounter between the teams. Both Jack Rodwell and Kyle Walker made their first starts for England in front of almost 49,000 fans. This was the lowest attended England match at the new Wembley. Only three players from the England team who faced Spain three days ago took to the pitch - Hart, Jones and Walcott. John Terry was back after being rested against Spain to lead out the England team.

Walcott almost gave England an early lead but the ball ultimately went to Zamora and into the side netting. Mid-way through the first half, Barry scored England's 2,000th goal. Downing crossed the ball to Barry and his header went into Sweden's net after touching Majstorovic.

Hart had to tip away a Sweden corner, but at the other end of the field England had a number of close misses, the first from Rodwell whose shot went wide. Then Phil Jones made a lovely run down the pitch and his shot agonisingly failed to go in Isaksson's net - it went just wide. Rodwell again came close later in the first half when his header hit the post. England had created a number of scoring opportunities during the first half which was encouraging.

England switched Scott Carson for Hart during the break, and in the 58th minute Milner and Sturridge made appearances for Rodwell and Walcott. For Daniel Sturridge, it was his debut. On what was a busy night for Downing, the Liverpool player burst down the field, getting off a long-range shot but it was saved by Isaksson. Carson was called into action late in the game when he needed to clear away danger from a cross from Larsson. With eight minutes of the game remaining Wilhelmsson missed a great opportunity to equalise from eight yards out.

So, England ended 2011 with a win over Sweden, their first in 43 years. It's been a good few days for the England team, and the last couple of games will have given Capello a number of fringe players to consider for next summer's European Championships.
