Match Reports

England 1 Sweden 1
Old Trafford, Manchester, England - Saturday 10 November 2001

A pretty dismal game on a late autumn day in Manchester. An interesting match-up however, for Erikkson who faced his countrymen. Owen, who had just returned from injury, was omitted from England's line-up to give the Liverpool player more rest, and was missed up front.

The contest seemed evenly matched until Trevor Sinclair broke away, being chased by two Swedes. Sinclair seemed to slip in the penalty area and for some reason the referee awarded a penalty. No complaints from England, however it was a bizarre decision and Beckham took the kick and put his country in the lead.

Before the interval, Sweden managed to pull themselves back on level pegging through a set piece. Andersson was brought down on the edge of the penalty area by Trevor Sinclair. The resulting free-kick was punched out by Nigel Martyn, but the ball went straight to Mild who siezed the opportunity to put his team back into the game.

It took England over an hour to look threatening, especially Sheringham. England, though, could not get the go-ahead goal. As the game drifted on thoughts turned to a recent England winner at the death, but Beckham and his team-mates could not deliver the goods this time and work their magic. It must be remembered though, this was a friendly and the coach was experimenting with players whilst he tries to get his squad together for next summer's World Cup Finals.

The game ended 1-1, a fair result, and England now have until February to prepare for their next friendly against Holland.
