Another three points towards England's efforts to qualify for next year's European Championships, and the end of another season. In the first half of the game it didn't look quite so rosy for
England though, who conceded a free-kick after Southgate fouled Nemeth, and shockingly the visitors had the nerve to take the lead from Janocko's set piece. Both Nemeth and Demo could have extended Slovakia's lead early in the second half but both squandered their chances. It was a relief for England that goals were not more forthcoming for their opponents.
Michael Owen restored some hope for England in the 62nd minute when he was brought down in the area by Zeman. Liverpool's striker took the penalty and got the game back on to level pegging. Now England were in the mood to party and end the season on a high. Frank Lampard believed he had put his team into the lead but the referee dismissed the goal for offside, however Slovakia had players on the goal-line. This would not deter England and they again pressed forward to get ahead of their opponents. Steven Gerrard, who always works so hard, played a great
ball to his fellow Liverpool team-mate, where Owen was able to head the ball past Konig and give England a 2-1 advantage. The scoreline remained that way at the final whistle and England can now relax and enjoy their summer break.
For Owen - captain for the night in the absence of Beckham, his two goals this evening meant that he has leap frogged Mike Channon and Kevin Keegan in the league table of top England scorers. Owen now
has 22 international goals and has still plenty of time to add more to his tally.
