England 2 Romania 3
2000 European Championship Finals - First Round
Stadio Communial, Charleroi, Belgium - Wednesday 20 June 2000

England went into this important game knowing that they only needed a draw to qualify for a quarter-final match against Italy. There was a suprising change to the starting line-up moments before kick-off when David Seaman pulled a muscle and had to withdraw from the match, forcing Kevin Keegan to replace him with Nigel Martyn.

The opening minutes of the match were scrappy, with neither team finding their rhythm. Seventeen minutes were on the clock before England put together a good set of passes but Chivu, while earning himself a yellow card, prevented England creating a scoring opportunity. Five minutes later Chivu gave Romania the lead after his cross went in the net off the far post.

Ilie squandered a chance to extend Romania's lead when Petrescu played the ball to his unmarked teammate, but Ilie headed the ball straight at Nigel Martyn.

As the first half was drawing to a close England equalised when Ince was brought down by Chivu in the penalty area and Shearer had no problem in scoring from the penalty spot. England were not finished in this half and took the lead on half-time through Michael Owen. A combination from Ince and Scholes found Owen, who siezed the opportunity to give his country the lead.

England started the second half giving up a goal to Munteanu. Moldovan crossed the ball but Martyn got to the ball and managed to punch it out but only as far Munteanu who punished England and tied the game, As time went on England's chances of qualifying for the next round looked a possibility despite their lack of sparkle, however Romania were still fighting for their chance to continue in the competition and increasingly caused problems for England's defence.

With a minute left to play in this match Phil Neville brought down Moldovan in the penalty area and conceeded a penalty. Ganea scored from the spot and put Romania through to the quarter-finals and England out of Euro 2000. England almost equalised in the dying moments but Shearer couldn't finish a Beckham free kick. In the end it was the right result for an England team who have failed to impress throughout the tournament. The defeat marked the end of Alan Shearer's international career.
