2012 European Championship Qualifier - Group G
Wembley Stadium, London, England - Tuesday 12 October 2010

Against a small footballing nation, England failed to score at the new Wembley stadium for the first time. Fortunately their opponents also couldn't get on the score sheet. It should have been expected that Montenegro could not be brushed aside, especially as they are the current leaders in qualifying Group G. After standing in for the injured Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard's seven game spell as captain came to an end with the return to international duty of the Manchester United defender. Gerrard had served well in the role of skipper in Ferdinand's absence.

It was vice-captain, Gerrard, who sent a long ball to Peter Crouch in the first half, and the Tottenham forward's touch saw the ball go just wide of Bozovic's goal. Adam Johnson also saw his free-kick go wide of Montenegro's goal but it was not as close to the goal as Crouch's effort.

With almost an hour on the clock, Gerrard made a lovely pass to Rooney. Montenegro's goalkeeper managed to block the shot and was quick to get to the loose ball before Crouch could knock the ball into the net. Crouch was replaced in the 68th minute by Kevin Davies, who became England's oldest debutant since 1950.

Bozovic was called into action on a number of occasions, making key saves, especially late in the game from Rooney and Gerrard. Montenegro escaped conceeding a penalty when officials missed Jovanovic's arm touching the ball. It was the same Montenegro player who beat Joe Hart with seven minutes of the match remaining, but the long range shot, mercifully for England, hit the crossbar.

An attempt by England, from Barry, in the final moments of the match was unable to break the deadlock, and depsite dominating possession England found themselves taking only one point from this game. Montenegro on the other hand looked to be delighted in leaving Wembley with a point.
