England hit the Reggae Boyz for six in their final warm-up game before the World Cup begins in what was the first encounter of the two teams. Gary Neville missed the match due to a hamstring injury and was replaced by Jamie Carragher. Neville is expected to resume training on Monday and should be ready for England's first World Cup match which is one week from today.
The match got off to a great start with a goal in the 11th minute from Frank Lampard. With a Robinson goal kick, England kept possession with the ball going to Crouch who headed the ball to Owen. The Newcastle forward played the ball back to the center of the box to Lampard who scored his 11th goal for his country. The home team's lead was extended to two on 17 minutes after Daley fouled Joe Cole. Beckham's free-kick was deflected into Jamaica's net by Taylor.
A mistake by Terry lead to Robinson having to make a save from Jason Euell. Peter Crouch connected to a Beckham corner in the 29th minute. The ball went in from Daley, but the Liverpool striker was credited with the goal. The game was put out of Jamaica's reach in the 32nd minute when Ferdinand laid the ball on to Owen who rounded Rcketts to put the ball in an open net. While the scoreline looked pretty in the afternoon sun, the next few minutes were not what Eriksson was looking for. Both John Terry (tight hamstring) and Ashley Cole (tight thigh) left the field, however both are expected to be fit for England's first World Cup game against Paraguay.
Into the second half, after a couple of chances had fallen to Jamaica through Fuller and Burton, Joe Cole tried his luck but his attempt went wide of the visitor's goal. Crouch met a Carragher low cross in the 65th minute for England's fifth goal and looked set to get his hat-trick with a penalty after Owen was brought down by Stephenson. However, Crouch put the ball over the bar. Crouch did get his hat-trick in the 89th minute after curling in Owen's pass in what was a great strike. Prior to the game ending Jamaica's Reid hit the ball well forcing James to tip the ball over the bar.
The result is encouraging as the team head into the World Cup next week, and an appropriate way to end Eriksson's reign of the national team on English soil. And now on to Germany and the tournament everyone is waiting for. Only seven days and counting until the big kick-off for England and their quest for the World Cup.
