England 6 Iceland 1
Friendly (FA Summer Tournament)
City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester, England - Saturday 5 June 2004

As we have become accustomed to see in recent friendlies, this one was no different...Eriksson fielded a strong team for the first period of play, before resting the majority of starters, this time in preparation for the European Championships which start next weekend. England's coach did decide to leave David James on the sidelines as he tested his back-up goalkeepers, Paul Robinson and Ian Walker.

The goals kept coming for England today as they finished their chances, with the exception of Paul Scholes who still could not break his goal drought. It has been three years since he last scored for his country. The goals onslaught was started by Wayne Rooney who bagged two goals today. The first was a case of burying Gary Neville's cross, whilst the second was a shot from 25 yards from the target. Inbetween Rooney's goals, was a strike by Lampard from 20 yards out after the Chelsea player teamed with Paul Scoles. Come the break, England were leading by three goals to one, having conceded a late goal in the first half to Helgason and were growing in confidence.

Despite nine substitutions by England at half-time, Iceland were unable to claw their way back into this game. Two goals from subsitute Darius Vassell and one from Bridge sealed the game and ultimately won England the silverware which was awarded to the winner of this mini tournament.

Now on to the real tournament as Europe's best go up against one another in Euro 2004, one week from now.
