England 1-1 Ghana
Friendly
Wembley Stadium, London, England - Tuesday 29 March 2011

Hot on the heals of victory in Wales, England took a short trip home to take on Ghana. A number of England players were released to their clubs after the fixture in Cardiff due to their involvement in the Champions League including captain Terry, Lampard, A Cole and Rooney. With a reduced squad, this resulted in Welbeck and Jarvis making their England debuts later in this friendly. Hart, Johnson, Wilshere and Young were the only players who started against both Wales and Ghana.

Anyone watching this game saw some exciting football. Adiyiah made a good run in the 7th minute, but Joe Hart raced off his line to make a good save. Ashley Young forced Kingson to make a lovely save in the 15th minute and mid-way through the first half, the Aston Villa winger saw his shot in front of goal agonisingly hit the crossbar.

With Hart having made another good save from Adiyiah, this time in the 27th minute, England went ahead in the 43rd minute when Young sent a good ball up to Downing, who laid the ball off to Carroll. With a low drive Carroll beat Kingson with the ball ending up in the far corner of Ghana's net. Delight for the Liverpool player who scored his first England goal.

Ghana fans were out in force in what is the country's first appearance at Wembley, indeed this was the first encounter between the two sides. Over 21,000 tickets had been sold to Ghana fans, which is the largest official number of tickets sold to an opposing team at Wembley for an international. The large contingent of away fans went wild when Gyan scored a lovely goal as the game went into injury time. It was a thoroughly deserved goal for the visitors who had created a number of exciting chances but had failed to capitalise.

Despite giving up a late goal, this will have been a useful match for the England manager. The England players now have a break of a little over two months from international duty before they host Switzerland in a European Championship qualifier.
