The famous red shirts once again worked in England's favour as they beat Germany for the first time in competition since 1966. So many times England had tried to beat Germany in the last 34 years but a win had eluded them until now, despite being so close in the semi-final of the 1996 European Championships, losing only on penalty kicks.
England had to make some changes to their starting line-up with Tony Adams and Steve McManaman picking up injuries in England's first Euro 2000 game against Portugal 5 days earlier. Martin Keown and Dennis Wise stepped up to take the vacant positions.
England's first promising attack came from a Beckham corner but the ball was played too deep for Sol Campbell to reach it. Neither team were close to breaking the deadlock until the 35th minute when Michael Owen was agonisingly close to scoring with a header, but some how Kahn managed to prevent England from taking the lead. England then appeared to apply some pressure up front. Two minutes before the end of the first half Scholes volleyed the ball toward Germany's goal but Kahn was able to collect the ball.
Six minutes into the second half, Owen tried to control the ball, to bring it down so he could shoot, but two German defenders surrounded him and Babbel managed to clear the ball. Then two minutes later Shearer, after going 7 international games without scoring, connected with a Beckham cross and headed the ball into Germany's net.
Germany tried to level the score but Jancker's shot just went over the crossbar. Then moments later Germany went dangerously close to equalising as the ball skimmed across England's goalmouth, but thankfully Scholl's shot went out of play.
After an hour of play England changed their tactics, replacing Owen with midfielder Steven Gerrard. Germany went so close again to levelling the score but Jancker hit the ball wide of England's net after a corner.
Germany were creating numberous attacks towards the end of the game but they could not avoid defeat and England left the Stadio Communial delighted to have won 3 points and in ectasy to have beaten Germany after trying for so long. England have two competitive games against Germany in World Cup 2002 qualifying coming up - starting in October, but for now they will focus their attention on their next Euro 2000 opponents - Romania. England need a draw from their last group game to continue in the competiton.
