England 2 Cameroon 2
Friendly
Kobe, Japan - Sunday 26 May 2002

This was England's final preparation match prior to their first 2002 World Cup game against Sweden in a week's time. England had a number of injuries going into the game but still managed to field a good team.

Cameroon went into an early lead after five minutes. Pierre's shot on goal hit the post but Eto'o was there to slot the ball into England's net for an easy goal. Despite going behind early on, England had most of the possession and quickly equalised through Vassell after 12 minutes. Scholes created the goal with a simple pass to the Aston Villa striker, who had no problem finding the net from 14 yards out.

With the score level it seemed to be Cameroon going for another goal after applying pressure on England's defence. Owen, however, had a goal disallowed when Heskey was offside earlier in the play. Wayne Bridge had a good run on thirty minutes when he beat three defenders, but his cross intended Owen was cleared from danger by Kalla.

As we saw earlier in the week, England made numerous changes to the team during half-time - six in total. Cameroon made no substitutions. Again, Cameroon took the lead early on in the second half through Geremi. The goal came from a free-kick taken by Geremi which David James was unable to stop.

Robbie Fowler entered the game on 76 mintues and looked to improve England's chances for scoring, but the Leeds United forward just couldn't reach a flick-on by Teddy Sheringham. With time ticking on it looked as though England could suffer their first defeat at the hands of an African side. Fowler had other ideas and grabbed the game tying goal in extra time through a header following a free-kick by Bridge, which was headed on by Sheringham to the Leeds United player. England had salvaged a draw, but more important than the score was the fact that England did not pick up any further injuries.

And now on to the World Cup......
