Match Reports

England 1-0 Belgium
Friendly
Wembley Stadium, London, England - Saturday 2 June 2012

This was England's final match before the European Championships which start on Friday. With Frank Lampard ruled out of the squad with a thigh injury, the remaining three Chelsea players who were rested for last week's friendly, following the Champions League Final, were back in action.

On his first start for England, Oxlade-Chamberlain's shot narrowly missed Belgium's goal. There was concern in the 19th minute over the departure of Gary Cahill. He was pushed by Mertens into Hart and was quickly replaced by Lescott, who got hurt himself in this so-called friendly when he later wore a bandage around his head following a cut above his eye. It was reminiscent of Terry Butcher!

In the 36th minute Welbeck latched on to a pass from club-mate Ashley Young and put the home side in the lead.

Wayne Rooney was given some playing time in the 53rd minute, despite not being able to play in the European Championships until the third match in the group stage, due to a suspension. Hazard and Fellaini failed to score with their attempts, and Gillet had a 20-yard shot which hit the post. Jermaine Defoe followed with a good effort, but his shot was stopped by the woodwork.

With England's final match before Euro 2012 begins now in the books, it seems the team will have an anxious wait regarding the fitness of Cahill and Terry who both left today's game with injuries. Attention will now turn to England's first European Championship game which is against France on 11 June. Here's hoping to a good start by England in the competition.

Post game note:
Cahill suffered a double fracture to his jaw and subsquently had to withdraw from the England squad.
