Wembley Stadium, London, England - Wednesday 23 February 2000

Emile Heskey's first start for the senior team was a success, so much so that coach Kevin Keegan will have several options come Euro 2000 for his strike force barring injury. The youngster was such hit he was named Man of the Match.

Nineteen minutes had passed before there was a sign that the deadlock could be broken in this friendly game at Wembley. England, through Heskey, built up the play well as the Leicester City striker blazed down the left flank and crossed the ball to Shearer. The Newcastle forward put the ball wide of the goal claiming he was brought to the ground by Chamot but play continued.

England were enjoying a lot of possession but Ortega threatened to spoil the good spell by the home side with a 25-yard shot, but the ball went wide of Seaman's goal. A minute later Ortega was given a caution after diving in the penalty area.

Four minutes prior to the interval Heskey almost created an opening for his team, gliding past Chamot but Ayala intercepted the ball destined for Paul Scholes.

Argentina started the second half brightly. Batistuta broke through England's defence to deliver the ball to Ortega but the Argentine just failed to make contact with be ball.

There were no real moments of signifance in the second half until 20 minutes were remaining on the clock, Ortega again tested England but his short went high and wide of England's goal. Three minutes later there was a clash of heads between Heskey and Ayala. Heskey required treatment and was stretchered off, returning to the play a minute later.

Argentina's first real chance of the game on 76 minutes when Ortega and Simeone combined and found Gonzalez free 25-yards out. A relieved Seaman saw the ball go wide of his goal. Then shortly afterwards Argentina's best chance to take the lead saw Crespo miss the ball from just eight yards from England's goal.

The final whistle saw a respectable draw, although England will be disappointed that they did not win the game. The performance of the team will have given Keegan and his coaching staff plenty to contemplate for the forthcoming European Championships.
