A new season and a new campaign awaited the England team as they prepared to take on Austria in their first qualifying match in a quest for
the World Cup (the Finals to be held in 2006 in Germany). A disappointing Euro 2004 are well behind the team now as they focused on the job in hand -
to get three points in Vienna. Sol Campbell and Wayne Rooney were missing from the starting line-up due to injuries, and the familiar face
of Paul Scholes is no longer present in a national team shirt following his retirement from international football over the summer.
Eriksson's team took the game to the Austrians in the opening half, having a 1-0 lead by the time the half-time whistle blew, then they
extended their lead after the interval. The visitors first goal came after the referee ruled that there had been an illegal back pass
to Austria's goalkeeper. Alan Smith tapped the free-kick to David Beckham, who played the ball to Lampard who scored his fifth goal in his
last seven games for England. The Chelsea midfielder seems to be on a roll for his country. Austria's goalkeeper, Manninger, was lucky to be
still on the field late in the first half when he looked to have been out of his area when he blocked a shot from Michael Owen. The error was
not seen by referee, Lubos.
Steven Gerrard, back from injury, added to England's goal in the 64th minute after being set-up by Smith and Owen. After this goal it seemed
that England were going to cruise to victory, however Austria had other plans. In the space of a couple of minutes, England's good work was
undone and Kollmann and Ivanschitz clawed Austria back into the game. Austria's first goal resulted from a free-kick when Kollmann bent the
ball around England's wall, beating David James too. Ivanschitz's goal was a shot from 20 yards and took a deflection, although James should
have done better.
It was a very different result to the expected scoreline after England had a 2 goal cushion. It's very frustrating that England could only
take one point away from Vienna, but it is better than no points and hopefully England will do better on Wednesday against Poland.
