While the first England 'B' game since 1994 ended in defeat, Glenn Hoddle will have left The Hawthorns with something to think about, namely Paul Merson. The Middlesbrough player was Man of the Match and certainly put in the effort, in
front of almost 14,000 fans. Unfortunately Merson's play wasn't enough to win the game for England although the home team had plenty of possession, particulary in the first period.
Whilst dominating the opening half, England did not capitalise on this advantage, although they did have one or two chances. England could have been ahead in only the third minute after Merson and Heskey had worked the ball to Wilcox, but the Blackburn Rovers player missed the target. They also had an opportunity later in the first half but Merson's cross went just behind Huckerby.
Into the second half and England tested the Chilean goalkeeper, Tejas, but to no avail. Chile decided they would bring Pressman into play with Vivar forcing the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper to make a save after 70 minutes. Moments after this, Chile, through Valenzuela connected with the ball from Neira and put the ball into England's net. With little under 20 minutes remaining the visitors were ahead.
Pressman was again required when Matteo let Valenzuela get by, but Neira was in the right place to score his second in the 82nd minute. With only 8 minutes remaining, England had little time to get back into the game and indeed they conceded defeat, but only after Heskey scored in the second minute of time added
After the game, 'B' team captain, Paul Merson, had this to say, "It was all about performance today and not the result. I thought in the first half we were outstanding and created many chances, but in the second half we tired a little and they played very well."
Peter Taylor, the 'B' team coach said, "We got beaten so we are disappointed with that but we took lots of good things out of the game".
